OT: AOL ending newsgroup service
I have just been informed that AOL will be discontinuing its newsgroup services
sometime in early 2005. I have been an AOL subscriber ever since I went online
in 1999 and have just taken newsgroup service for granted. What are my options
for other ways to access NGs? Thanks

Google http://www.google.com is currently enhancing their newsgroup feature. Go to
Google and click on the "Groups" link you will see on their page. You can
read and respond.

A good free news service is "Individual Net" which is available from the
Free University Berlin, Germany. The service is for *text* only groups
and no binaries. My follow-up is being posted via their service.

You will also need a new news reader, I use Forté Agent which can be
downloaded and used for 30 days before being asked to pay for it.

Doesn't really matter. I prefer the smaller companies..just as long as
they provide good service at a fair price. I don't need much
handholding. I just need web and usenet access, a couple of email
account names and a web page telling how they need my news and mail
programs to be set up. In my immediate area there are at least five
companies that aren't national or 'seen on TV'. I like this type of
company versus the large ones as they seem to be more responsive to
questions and providing service. The large companies seem to have an
attitude of 'we're big, give us the money we want and accept what you get
because we don't need you that badly'. But thats just my bias...m

Re: OT: AOL ending newsgroup service
I just switched from comcast's news server to news.individual.net,
which is free after registering, and works well with Free Agent. It
is non-binary posting, and suddenly I am seeing lots less cross-posted
obviously OT spam - such as porn headers and Ads (even in unmoderated
groups)...
but why are you still with aol to being with?
