Land Patents

Hello Group,

I just came from the governments land patent website and their FAQ does not
answer my questions and I hope I might get help here.

There are two types of patents that I am concerned with.

1. Cash Entry: An individual could purchase up to 640 acres at $1.25 per
acre.

My 3rd g-grandfather did a cash entry and the land patent document is dated
1887. A fellow researcher sent me details that is the "Receiver's Receipt",
but dated 1883. Why the difference in dates? Did it take 4 years from the
time he paid cash until he received an official document stating so? Or
maybe it just took 4 years for the feds to officially file it in their
records?

2. Homestaed act of 1862: An individual could claim up to 160 acres of land
for free(except filing fee) as long as they proved it in 5 years time.

My g-grandfather did this and the document is dated 1901. Does that mean he
claimed it in 1901 or that he did in 1896 and in 1901 received the document
stating that he had proved the land?

I hope you can be of help.
Thank You
Roland
