A question of immigration.
Hello...
Prior to the opening of Ellis Island in 1890 or so, where or what was used
as a processing center for immigrants into New York? Thanks for helping in
advance.

Re: A question of immigration.
One of the links given in the message you quote leads to a
list of film numbers for NARA and LDS - for the ships that
James wanted.
http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/fil ... york.shtml
It's free. And its on the site indicated. No need to click
OFF site to go anywhere else.....
Let's see, the second link given is to a special page about
Castle Garden, which was the processing center in use for
the time period James needs.
http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/ships/castle-garden.htm
On this page (Castle Garden) ONE of the links given leads
to a page about a CD ROM for this time period (it's clearly
labelled, no need to click on it if you are not interested)
The other links on the Castle Garden page are to online
FREE databases for the time period wanted
Here's 3 of them (there are more on the page given)
NY Times extracts for ship arrivals and passenger names
http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/ships/nytimes.htm
Images (and some accompanying transcripts) of actual
passenger lists in this time period
http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/ships/
NY Almshouse records for 1855-1858
http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/ships/ny_alms1855.htm
These are all free. These are all put online courtesy of
Olive Tree Genealogy and the hard-working volunteers who
give their time to transcribe these records for you and
other researchers.
"Nothing free there" my foot!
Everything on the sites given is free, as in no charge to
you. The majority of the links to other sites are to sites
that also have free information.
So don't throw out the good stuff just because you have
some bee up your bonnet.

I WAS a subscriber for a time and got tons of good information about
my Connecticut family via the CT. death index they have. I've just
grown extremely weary of the many, many, many, many web sites that
load themselves up with links that eventually lead to the "Sign up
Today!" links of Ancestry. This 'olive' site was just the latest
example.

The company's that are selling these records are making an enormous killing
out of the general public. I have been a transcriber for many years now for

I have to step in here, we all have the nifty *back* button we can click, if
we find we are at a pay site where we don't want to be.
Lorine has spent an incredible amount of time providing free data to
genealogists at her own expense. The fact she has ads on her site is simple
math...without them, thousands of us would not have access to the free part.
She has worked hard to provide free source data to anyone who wants it,
recognize the fact she is doing a difficult task, that is costly in terms of
time and money and don't look a gift horse in the mouth.
