Is there a place that the old census records are kept by the government that
you can get a clear, legible copy?
thanks

Do I understand correctly that you mean the original paper records? At
least some of them have been destroyed after microfilming.

In this country, census records are destroyed as soon as styatistical

I have been able to see the original census records for an English
county but it had to be specially ordered up for me and it was only
done because the microfilm was illegible. I had to go back to the
census office on a specific day in order to see them.

I am speaking of the U.S. Government, or State Government. The question I
think has been answered............more than likely they have been
destroyed.....too bad.

Bob,

It depends on what years you are seeking and where. For example, in
searching for my family in Lafayette and Iowa Cos. WI the county courthouses
had the old census records for the 1800s which I was able to go through . I
recommend you check with the county courthouse where you have an interest.

There is an american genealogy site who has numeric copy of census for many
census years. You can also order a quality copy of a census page as well.
You have to pay some money to get access to this service.
