Ancestry.com
Hello,
I recently found this group through searching the 'net for family
information.
I'm glad I did as I've gotten helpful suggestions in just the few days I've
been here.
It has no doubt been discussed here, but what do you all think of
subscribing to a search group such as Ancestry.com? Is it the best, or are
there better ones? Is the price of $199
per year for access to data typical? Have any of you purchased/used these
services?
Thank you in advance.

Re: Ancestry.com
I wouldn't do without it. I am researching in the U.S. only, and I use
ancestry.com every day that I am doing family research.
However, it is only one tool I use. I also use HeritageQuest, the US GenWeb
Project sites, FamilySearch, and many other free resources. To find lots of
links to resources, you might graze through http://www.cyndislist.com/
Best wishes in finding the research tools that are right for your needs.

Most of the information I have came from ancestry.com. If you live in the town
where your ancestors did you might be able to look up most of it yourself.
Otherwise, I suggest you subscribe to at least the census.

Re: Ancestry.com
Thank you for your replies. I'm rather new at this as my maternal ancestors
(PA Deutch) have kept very good records and I didn't need a search service
for any of that information. My husband's family (AHNEMANN, INSELMANN,
BORGER, KAEMPFER, FUST) came from Germany to New York City and lived in a
close community in Brooklyn for the most part. They kept no records that I
can find. _And_ they changed the spelling of their names after they arrived
in the US. This has been an adventure.
Thanks again so much.
Blessings,

Very good but just make sure you get the right subscription package for you
and that you understand how to unsubscribe.
There have been the occasional post on newsgroups from people who subscribed
to an offer only to find they weren't getting access to what they thought
they were getting and had to spend more. Similarly from people who signed up
to a free trial offer but didn't comply with the exit T&C's and found they
had to pay for a 1 year subscription they didn't want/need.

I am going to subscribe to it, but I read that you have 14 days to decide if
what you get is what you want, and you can cancel your subscription. I hope
I'm not reading it wrong. After the 14 days its your baby. They say in
plain words, No Refunds.

Re: Ancestry.com
I've been using this for about a week now. It has its limitations. For
instance, I find the free Ellis Island records to be much easier to search
as you can scroll down the passenger lists and not do that annoying arrow
thing at Ancestry.
LDS free listings are almost as good and sometimes better than Ancestry.
On the other hand, though Ancestry takes awhile to learn to navigate, I have
had some success. You may find that they don't let you in certain databases
during the 14 day trial. And I couldn't make the plug-in work that is
needed to view the 1920 Census.
I'm undecided, I guess. I'm almost certain I won't take the year
subscription.
I would appreciate comments from others on what they experienced with
Ancestry.

I think you're going to find that most current Ancestry subscribers will say
it has been a positive experience, while those who didn't find what they
needed or think the cost is too great will advise against it. Granted,
Ancestry includes several databases that can be found for free elsewhere on
the internet. But as one who is researching all descendants of an ancestor
who arrived in America in the 1600's, I have found Ancestry's US census to
be most valuable to me, and a money saver as well. Before, I had to choose
carefully which LDS microfilm to order to get the most "bang for the buck"
from my genealogy budget. With Ancestry, I can essentially check dozens of
possibile census hits with a few mouse clicks in a matter of minutes--
something that would have cost me fifty bucks a few years ago.
Even though Ancestry's census access is more expensive than some others, I
find their numerous every-name index searches and Soundex searches to be
invaluable and a big time saver. I also subscribe to Ancestry's US Records
database and have found it useful, considering all the folks I'm recording
data on.
I guess you'll just have to judge how and where you would acquire similar
data without using the online subscription services and see which suits your
bottom line the best.

I'd be interested in knowing what country your family lived in. The German
connection is not good, I find. Ancestry was of little help here. Also,
the person who sold me the subscription at Ancestry told me I would be able
to search Baltimore and Philadelphia passenger lists. That was not the case
as I was sent to a list of people coming in these ports, but no actual
passenger lists that one could check to see if this was indeed the correct
person coming from the correct region or place in Germany.
I'm sure Ancestry has helped many people. I just found it to be of limited
use for my German immigrant family research. On the other hand, the Ellis
Island site is fabulous. And it's free.
Ancestry tells me that they expect to have fully searchable passenger lists
available next year. So I've cancelled my subscription and will visit them
again perhaps next year.
I must say Ancestry was rather gracious about giving me a credit after
having subscribed and then changed my mind! Though my advice is to be sure
they have cancelled the entire service. The first time I tried they only
cancelled parts and charged me for things I didn't want. Again, it _did_
get straightened out. And they were extremely polite about it all.
Thanks, by the way, for the helpful hints I've gleaned from this newsgroup!
It has been great to see what kinds of searches are going on. I'll go back
to lurking, now.
All the best,
Ann
