What name to use

Legg inn av Radar » 21 jan 2005 23:31:13

My gg-grandfather used the name Benjamin Holmes (KY 1831 - KS 1900) all his
life for everything census, tax records, medical records civil war military
service. Everything except on his two marriage licenses, he used the name
Ennis Holmes. In that I haven't been able to find anything on him or his
family prier to his first marriage in 1851, I am assuming his real name was
Ennis and preferred Benjamin. I don't know where the name Benjamin came
from, perhaps a middle name. His second wife went through a lot of grief to
claim his pension in that she had never heard the name Ennis.

My question is how do I list him?

1.. Ennis Benjamin Holmes
2.. Ennis Holmes ( add Benjamin as an "also know as")
3.. Benjamin Ennis Holmes
4.. Benjamin Holmes (also known as Ennis)

Thanks

I'd go for..

Ennis Holmes (alias Benjamin Holmes, possibly born Ennis Benjamin Holmes)

or if that's too long just..

Ennis Holmes (known as Benjamin Holmes)

Since he used Benjamin for nearly everything government connected, I'd
go with Benjamin Holmes (also known as Ennis).

At this time, we have no way of knowing what his official name was, nor whether
Ennis -- or even Benjamin -- started out as part of it. We might as well call
him Benjamin, since that is what appears in most of the documents. But it
doesn't do justice to the complexity of the case to relegate "Ennis" to a
parenthetical aside. Quote the marriage licenses, and quote the relevant
testimony from the pension file. It will remind yourself and assure your other
readers that the "Ennis" records truly belong to your subject.
