Memoirs

Legg inn av William Barfieldsr » 21 jan 2005 16:00:02

In the rush to gather as many names and as much information as I can on my ancestors, I realized I was doing an injustice to my own descendents. I had not set down and started writing about myself. I know my children have heard my wife and I describe things that occurred in our younger years while growing up and getting married, etc., but what about the ggggrandchildren who will not hear of those things from us. Since then I have started writing about all my experiences growing up, good and bad. I have tried to give an accurate and truthful account of my life starting with as far back as I can remember. Wouldn't it have been great if all our ancestors had wrote down their histories whether they were good or bad, exciting or dull and most of all how they just lived day after day. I would have loved to read how my ggggrandmother started her day, the things she thought about while she worked about the house, the recipe she used to bake bread and the disappointment if the cake didn't rise. How things worked back then, from sawing logs to raising and caring for the farm animals. I now keep a journal of the things I do during the day, it might bring a smile or an out and out belly laugh for my ggggrandchildren to read of some crazy thing I did during my humdrum daily life. Just food for thought.

Something else I think would be interesting is to be able to hear the
voices of our ancestors and to give our descendents the chance to hear
us. People become real then, not just names on a tree, a photograph
in the family album or a book of words.

I have a few books which are supposed to be diaries or based on
diaries of real people but I wonder if they are or whether they are
pure fiction.

Once I got involved with genealogy and started wondering about the lives of my
ancestors, I decided I would leave a memoir as my legacy. I have had fun
writing about my past and I hope it will be finished by Christmas 2005. It's
possible no one in the next couple of generations will want to read it (after
all, they think they know me), but I would bet there will be some budding
genealogist who will enjoy reading about life in the 20th century and early
21st century. In fact, I established a "writing group" so that it would
motivate us to keep writing. We meet 2x a month to read to each other what we
have written. Wonderful stories from each and every one of them! None of us
are bored by the others' stories--in fact, we are fascinated. We are amateurs
but we are writing!

I have tried to not only shed light on my life (good and bad), but the times I
lived in, the inventions and innovations that happened in my lifetime, the
politics, the social changes--so much has happened in my lifetime.

My younger years were so different than how people live now. One of our writers
did a wonderful job with that. He grew up in San Francisco and the way he
chose to provide the atmosphere of a different time was to talk about "going to
town" with his mother--a walk from his North Beach home and down Market St. He
described how he and his mother dressed to go to town and the sights through
his eyes. It evoked a time and attitude of what it was like in the 1940's in
San Francisco. I can't help but think his readers will be able to see and feel
what it must have been like then.

Sorry this was so long, but I'm enthusiastic about setting our memories to
paper. I hope, if you haven't tried it yet, that you will soon.

Scream advertising, but I think this is a great program, audio files,
pictures, videos, and written. It gives all kinds of questions (50,000) to
help you detail what your life is like.
Very helpful.

Have you thought about publishing your history or memoir as a
paperback book? A friend of mine used http://www.ebookstand.com to publish
her 80 year old grandmother's story. It was a HUGE hit at the
birthday party and family reunion.

Just a thought.

Hm. You're posting as "eBook Tara", and telling us about a commercial
site selling eBooks.

Just a thought.

Is that all it is? Or is this maybe something that belongs in the
..marketplace group?

Me, if I was going to do something like this, I'd have Apple print it.
Good fast service, excellent product, and easy to use.

Okay, I tried it and the guests at the birthday party were aghast, my
grandmother was devistated, and all the plants in the back yard died. Now, no
one will come to the reunion and the local landfill won't take the extra books.
Do you have any other products you'd recommend?
