The Sarah Ann Story

Legg inn av mickg » 19 jan 2005 21:08:58

Thinking about it:

There's a mixed story of whether Sarah Ann was abducted by Gypsys or a
foundling.

She does seem after 1881 to have decided her name was Richards. She used
this as her name at marriage and on her children's births.

In 1861 William Richards has a family at 4 Willow St Bermondsey
including Edward who later appears at 54 King & Queen St Walworth in
1881. The address Sarah Ann Richards gives as hers at her 1884 marriage

William Everard and his wife Christian raised a little girl Sarah Ann
born 1864 Registered as Sarah Ann Everard born Henry St St Georges
Southwark June 1864. In 1871 and 1881 she is with them listed as born
Southwark or Borough. She disappears between 1881 and 1891, William also
dies during this period.

There's no trace of Sarah Ann Richards before 1884.

In 1891 Sarah Ann and her husband James Quinton have a 4 year - old
Daughter named Christian and a 53 year old visitor named Christian
Everard - Widow.

There's no record of Sara Ann Everard marrying anyone named Richards who
died all occurring between 1881 and 1884 plus Sarah puts her status at
the wedding as Spinster.

Here's the latest idea I have.

William Richard's wife Eliza has a child Sarah Ann in 1864 and dies
close to that time.
William can't raise a new born girl at this time and finds William and
Christian to take her in, register her and raise her. Christian was a
nurse so could have been involved in the birth of Sarah and/or Death of
Eliza.
The families remain in contact until Sarah's pending 1884 marriage she
is told the truth and maybe temporarily moves in with 'brother' Edward
Richards at 54 King & Queen St.
Sarah An marries and having used her Richards name from William
Everard's Death on names her first child, a girl Christian in honour of
the woman that raised her.

Sarah comes up with the Gypsy story because she now has conflicting
birth dates. Maybe it was registered late and changed to comply with the
law.
