When I brought up a passenger on the 1820 - 1850 list on Ancestry it gave a
Family Identification Number.
Can someone tell me what that is? I can't seem to find an explanation on
Ancestry.
Thank you

Re: Ancestry Family Identification Number
That's a pretty cool little number, to my way of thinking, anyway. Not all
their passenger records have that field in the database, but when they do,
you can re-enter that number in the search engine, in the "Keywords" field,
if I remember right, and it will show you all the people that the person was
traveling with. That's if they came with a family, if they were traveling
alone, they'll be the only person with that number.

Re: Ancestry Family Identification Number
Thanks Tara.
I'm not sure that is correct. I was hoping that was the answer however -
When I bring up the number (566326) of my ancestor I get a list of 7 people
on
5 different ships with 5 different arrival dates in three different years
1847, 1840, 1841.
Only 3 of them were on the same ship as my ancestor.
I've sent an email to Ancestry to see if they can explain that number.
IF I get an answer I'll post it to the group.

Re: Ancestry Family Identification Number
The number is only unique for each database. It doesn't work across multiple
databases because the numbers duplicate. It's the same as a surname field.
The Jones family in the 1930 New York census database isn't necessarily the
same Jones as in the Michigan Birth index. A broad example, but you get the
idea... Those 3 people on the same ship were traveling with your ancestor.

Re: Ancestry Family Identification Number
Nevermind my last answer. Ancestry's new exact match/close match search
engine is doing something odd. If you look at the results of the 566326
keyword search. All those folks don't actually have the same number. Only
the first 4 digits are the same. Ancestry appears to have ruined a good
thing. The last time I used that feature, several months ago, I got only
results of folks in the same family. Now it appears to give you all close
results and you have to look at each result to see if the family number is
indeed the same.

Re: Ancestry Family Identification Number
I saw that the first 4 numbers were bold and that is what they were
matching.
I'm not sure what Ancestry considers close but those results are that
close.
Nice of them to give out the correct information - not exact, not even close
for
some. I agree, seems like they ruined a good thing. Maybe they could give
the
option of exact or close matches.
