To find an ancestor in Canada you must narrow your search
to (at the very minimum!) a province or territory. Every
province/territory has different records, just as every
state in USA has different records. These records vary as
to when they were begun, what has survived and where they
are housed

There is *no* Canada-wide index except the 1881 online
census at http://familysearch.org/

For help with your Canadian genealogy hunt, see
http://olivetreegenealogy.com/can/

Choose your province/territory of interest from the list.

I'd suggest that since your ancestors were in Michigan that
you start your search in Ontario. Many Ontario residents
migrated to MI, so if you are really stuck with narrowing
down to a location, you might as well look in Ontario
records first.

For that, see http://olivetreegenealogy.com/can/ont/

For help with online free census records see
http://allcensusrecords.com/canada/

For help with land records (I'd have a look in the Ontario
wide CLRI index just in case....) see
http://olivetreegenealogy.com/can/ont/land.shtml

There are many other avenues of research for Ontario but no
use telling you all of them in case that is not where your
ancestors were from.

What about immigration/naturalization records? What info
did you get from the US Census? The 1900, 1910 ,1920 and
1930 census identify citizenship
status, with notations showing the individual was an
Alien,
or had started the Naturalization process or had his final
papers. The year of immigration is also shown. 1920 also
nicely provides a year of naturalization.

You can read more about the value of census records in
your
search for an immigrant ancestor at
http://naturalizationrecords.com/usa/census.shtml

If your Canadian ancestors immigrated to USA after 1906 you
need to check the St Alban's Border crossings. In 1895
Canada and USA established a joint inspection
system. Passengers arriving in Canada who intended to go
on
to United States were inspected by US Officials at the
Canadian Port of Arrival, then enumerated on US
immigration
lists. Immigrants were also given inspection cards which
they turned in to US Officials once they were on board
trains going to United States. Two sets of records were
created - passenger lists and compiled inspection cards.

These CANADIAN BORDER CROSSING records were microfilmed by
INS. They cover 1895-1954 and are indexed. They do NOT
include Canadians before 1906. After September 30, 1906
both Canadians and non-Canadians are included on these
lists.

For more information on the St Albans (Canadian Border
Crossing) Lists (including film numbers), see
http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/stalbanslist.shtml

Hi George

You had more information than you thought you did! :-)

I took a look through those census records - and found that
in most of the census records Charles said his mother was
born VT, his father Canada BUT in 1880 he says his father
was b. NY.

Also found Charles in 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930 - and
from those he gives his year of immigration as 1872 and
1876. But from the ages of the children and where they were
born we can narrow that to between 1874 and 1878. That
lets out the St Alban's list but it helps because most of
the provinces he was likely from were using vital
registration by 1874 which is when his daughter Minnie was
born.

I kept hunting for his father who you called Malangton but
couldn't find him. Finally I found him in 1881 census - you
didn't tell us this important fact! He's listed as
Melunthon D. Olds, age 52, b USA, English origin, farmer
with wife Louisa A, 51 b USA and daughter Emma Jane 12 b
USA. But he's living in Philipsburg, Missisquois, Quebec!
That's near the Northern border of Vermont so it makes
sense. But you know from Emma's birth that he was in USA
(vermont?) circa 1869. So you should find him on the 1870
census in USA.

Missisquoi is known as the Eastern Townships of Quebec so I
went to the Quebec and Eastern Tp Genealogy site
http://simmons.b2b2c.ca/ and did a search of the free
index.

Your guys are there - in census records, church and
cemetery. It's a free index search but you have to pay for
details. I've never used the site but it's been around a
long time.

Here's the index findings but you should go and look for
yourself as there are 46 hits for the surname OLDS!

Olds Malancton D Cemetery
Olds Malancton D Church
Olds Malanethon Census
Olds Malanthon Census
Olds Melancton D Census

Saving what might just be the best for last -- I also found
Olds, Charls Lewis - Church

What do you want to be this is your Charles L. Olds, and
that the church record just might be his marriage? To
clinch this, I found the following

Peacock, Esther Jane - Church

btw there are 179 hits for the surname PEACOCK

Another thing I found for your Charles in the census - in
1930 he is naturalized but in 1900 he had his first
papers,. I didn't check 1920, it should give more details.
For help finding his naturalization papers see
http://naturalizationrecords.com/usa/

Marlene Simmons offers an excellent service at that website for all of
the Eastern Townships and I highly recommend it as a very satisfied
paying customer. Her prices are very inexpensive for what you get. He
would probably also be interested in Pam Wood Waugh's website and
message boards at:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~qceastwn/queries.html for any queries regarding
Missisquoi and the other counties in the ET of Quebec.

Are the names Cash, Lola, or Dewey among your OLDS names? I'm looking
for 'em -- Dewey probably b c 1856; Cash and Lola are his children. MAY
have been in Ohio. All I've got are the names. :(

Cheryl,

I am sending a 1900 census image which shows Cash and Lola Olds with their
mother Laura Copeland and stepfather residing in Waterville, Douglas Co.,
WA. Also, included is the 1920 census image for Cash and his family
residing in Seattle, King Co., WA.
