ancestry.com vs. genealogy.com
If you were going to buy a subscription from one of these services, which
would you choose?
I'm looking at either super subscription from ancestry.com
(http://www.ancestry.com/landing/product ... ee_v2.html) for $189.00 or
the Gold Annual membership from genealogy.com
(http://www.genealogy.com/memgold-pop.html) for $199.00?
I've been working on my genealogy for a couple of years on an off, and have
found most of my information from census, but I really want to get going on
this. I'm leaning towards ancestry.com because they offer a historical
newspaper collection and also a UK and Ireland collection (of which some of
my tree is Irish) as well as the US census collection. But I have no idea
how good they are.
Thank you!

For $35/year HeritageQuest (via Godfrey Library) also has an impressive
collection of searchable newspapers, perhaps better even than Ancestry.
Membership also includes access to most census years, many vital records and
a wide range of other goodies including UK and Irish collections. You imply
that you've already exhausted most of your census searches. That's where I
find that Ancestry excels over HeritageQuest. Ohterwise, you might consider
HeritageQuest among whatever other suggestions you receive here.

Re: ancestry.com vs. genealogy.com
Both Ancestry.com and Genealogy.com are owned by the same company,
I think it is myfamily.com
It appears that Ancestry.com gets more new databases than Genealogy.com.
They are using the same materials for some things like the scanned census
images.
I guess I recommend Ancestry.
BUT "Heritage Quest" can be used for FREE, by finding a local public library
that will give you a library card and that library provides this service via
their webpage. The library I tried let me get a card for free with just
some
valid ID, and I use Heritage Quest online from home all the time.
It has the census, scanned in histories, PERSI, and revolutionary war
records.
Still Ancestry.com has a larger collection of databases.

Of those two, I'd recommend Ancestry. They have more databases, many with
actual images, not just an index, and most importantly, a search engine that
actually searches for more than just first and last name. Genealogy's search
engines are a joke. No soundex search, no wildcards, no keywords, ages,
places, etc. You have to try and think of every possibly spelling variation,
typo, transcription error, nickname, etc. to search on.
I had hoped MyFamily.com would fix that when they bought it, but it looks to
me like they're putting everything into Ancestry.com and getting ready to
let Genealogy.com go away. If you look at the "What's New" area of each
site, Genealogy.com lists 5 new databases added in Dec 2004. Ancestry
already has 2 of those (Gulf Coast Passenger List, 1920 TN Census Index),
has almost the same info in another (RI Birth Records) and the other two are
pretty much worthless, in my opinion, the World Family Tree databases. When
you look at Ancestry.com, they have added or updated 43 databases so far in
Jan 2005. It looks pretty one-sided.
I don't know anything about HeritageQuest. They share census pics with
Genealogy.com but I don't know how flexible their searches engines are.

state, census, etc. In my single surname search, I check almost every
directory, newspaper, etc. and would like to know when something new has

I have both. Of the two, I like Ancestry.com. The sad thing is that
they are owned by the same company and you must join both to get what
each doesn't have. They also have very little on ancestry south of the
border. Lots on European ancestry.. Unfortunately, I want south of the
border info. I have written to request more sites, but after five years
with both, there is still very little.

And, soon after I posted the query, I did see the list you mention.

Katrina posted a great long list of URLs for Mexican or Mexican
related sites a few days ago. I only saw it by accident because I'd
forgotten to readjust a setting otherwise I'd have been wondering like
you) I guess your newsreader baulked at the list

PS I found out why I "lost" your posts for a while - I'd blocked
someone in one group called Hal and this daft newsreader blocked every
sender with the letters h-a-l in their name!!!

At the risk of seeming pedantic, South of *which* border?
Pedantic or parochial?<vbg> Most people wouldn't even imagine she meant the
M-D line.
Cute.
Don't you remember the song?
bOB
Uhhh -- no? Clearly, not "Maryland, my Maryland" -- "I left my
heart..." "The White Cliffs of Dover..." "Papa loves Mambo..." "Port
Said..." ???
surprised expression on face
It's a well-known love song with a great melody that's been done by Sinatra and
others.
"South of the border, down Mexico way.
That's where I fell in love where stars above, came out to play.
And now as I wonder, my thoughts ever stray.
South of the border, down Mexico way." etc
Bob
T'was the theme song to a movie of the same name.
