2 census in the same year?
HI,
I know sometimes they did a second census. For instance one of my ancestors
was included in two censuses in 1870 in Philadelphia, PA. How would I find
the second census for my other ancestors in Philadelphia that year? And why
did they re-enumerate? Were there too many mistakes in the first one?
Thanks,
Nancy

I am unaware of any second census or second enumeration in any census year.
I have found some relatives enumerated twice because they were present at
the time of the enumeration. For example, I have a relative enumerated in
her home state of Wisconsin and then again appears in the census in
California while apparently visiting her daughter. I suggest you look at
the enumeration dates for your ancestor in 1870 they are probably different
dates.

My John Albert Hummel along with his wife Mary and daughter Mary J. is
enumerated twice in 1870. The second enumeration is later in the year ...
in November.
I should be able to find my other ancestors in a second enumeration as well
but can't seem to find them. Maybe they only did some areas over again?

There is a notation of a "second enumeration" in some listings on Ancestry.

Well Nancy I just learned something new. I found reference to all of the
2nd Enumerations for Philadelphia here on ancestry
http://content.ancestry.com/Browse/list ... iladelphia
Since you probably know which Ward and District maybe you can find them in
the 2nd Enum. by doing a page by page search.
Thanks for the lesson.

I did a sampling of the 1870 2nd Enum. and it appears only name, age, and
sex were recorded in the 2nd Enumeration.

however. I noticed New York had second enumerations as well. I wonder why.
But you are right. The second one had scant information however I know the
address to be true since it is where my ancestor was born.

It appears, too, that not all districts were done over again. Most were
however. I noticed New York had second enumerations as well. I wonder why.

Re: 2 census in the same year?
I believe the census takers were paid by the number of households they
visited. I have one instance of a family in the census twice, once spelled
Farris, which is correct, then many pages later as Pharris, all the names
and dates are the same, except the last two children which they made up! I
have read that occasionally the census was "fudged" to show more houses
visited and I can certainly say that is true in this case.

Re: 2 census in the same year?
In the case of my ancestors several months had passed. The second census
was done in November. I have both of the census images of the same family
in two different places. Maybe, in some cases, the scenario of which you
speak would apply but not in all. Don't know if the whole city was done
over or just some areas that were retaken. I can't seem to find anything on
it on the Internet but I am sure it is out there.
I guess it really
doesn't matter that much. I find the silliest little things that grab my
curiosity.

Re: 2 census in the same year?
Do not know of other situations, but my understanding that after the
original 1870 census taken in New York City, they were unhappy with the
results so did a second one the following year.
