abbreviation?

In a county marriage record book, the letters V D M appear after the
name of minister.

Anyone know what it's supposed to mean? I don't *think* everyone in the
county was Catholic, (g) so I doubt it's that easy.

Cheryl,

As far as I know it doesn't denote a denomination. Here is the definition I
am aware of from the Latin -- Verbi Dei Minister (VDM) - Minister of the
Word of God.

Verbi (or Verbum) dei Minister? Preacher of God's Word? I think it
designates a particular divinity degree, not Catholic but evangelical.

Speaking of abbreviations, I've come across the abbreviation "Ab" after
some entries in the 1930 Milwaukee census. This is ED 40-270, 21st Ward
Block 3393, Sheet 12HA (or just search for Emma Petersen married to Peter
Petersen in 1930).

"Ab" seems to be written after the name, not just for heads of household.
Does anyone know what it means?

I have never seen this before. My guess, and it is a guess, is that the
"ab" indicates they were absent at the time of the enumerator's visit and
the information was obtained from a single source.

Thanks! I'd never seen it anywhere. Live'n'learn.

Prolly "Ab"sent which pretty much translates to "so we got the info from
anyone willing to hazard a guess"?

Probably . . .

Verbi Dei Minister (V.D.M.) - Minister of the Word of God

Hope this helps.
