Does ancestry have obits?

Legg inn av Ennc » 05 jan 2005 00:10:02

Hi,

I see that Ancestry.com advertises they have newspapers on their site.
However does that mean they have entire newspapers that would include the
obituaries?

Thanks,
Nancy

In the "basic" subscription they claim to have obituaries, but they are
very, very limited. They have never been of any use to me at all. The
obituaries are usually of very, very recent vintage.

Yes. On the newspapers they have, they are images of the entire newspaper,
including the obituaries. The tidbits in the society pages are interesting
too. Who gave parties, the guest lists, who's visiting relatives, changing
jobs, etc.

And the costs of meat and clothes and other things. Sirloin for less than
25 cents a pound. I kid you not

Ancestry has obits available separately from the newspaper collection. I
have found at least two that pertain to relatives of mine, both of which
provided me with previously unknown information.

A Godfrey Scholar subscription ($35/year) will get you access to lots of
older local newspapers, all keyword searchable, including about 100 years of
the NY Times, LA Times, Chicago Tribune, and Washington Post. If you can't
find the obit you want, it can be enlightening to see what the Post and
Times were saying the days after Billy the Kid and Jesse James were killed.
