1878 Medical term clarification

Legg inn av Jim » 02 jan 2005 22:43:24

I'm looking at a Scottish death registration from1878 and need some help
with the cause of death.
I can't make out the handwritting. What I get is: "Int_______tion" of the
bowels, 7 days.
I believe the word has 14 letters. Clarification anyone?
Thanks
Jim

I believe the term is "intusseception". I'm not sure of the exact spelling,
but it refers to s condition in which the bowel turns inside itself, like a
sock being turned inside out. The result is s severe constriction, and death
commonly follows. I suffered from the condition myself 73 years ago;
fortunately we lived close enough to a hospital for an immediate operation.
I was 9 months old at the time.

intussusception--the enfolding of one segment of the intestine within another.

The result is blockage of the intestine with eventual gangrene. Today surgey
would be successfully done.

In that era, I think the word was more likely "inflamation" of the bowels.

It is intussusception - according to the Shorter Oxford Dictionary - an
early 19th century term, exactly as Bernie describes.
