On census records for Henry County, Indiana, his birthplace was always
given as Virginia and that's what my uncle, his great-grandson, who'd
never seen any of those, also said. Christine Rose (who has a Rose
family website) said that he was descended from William Rose of Surry
County, Virginia.

My doubts come in because a descendant of his daughter-in-law's sister
sent my a PDF file that gives his birthplace as North Carolina (in
1785). He died in Henry County, Indiana, where he had settled before
1835, on May 18, 1872.

The daughter-in-law is Sallie Byrket Rose, my great-great-grandmother
who married Elliott Rose, Jesse Rose's eldest son, Feb. 19, 1835 in
Henry County, Indiana.

The census records were Henry County, Indiana, and Gentry County,
Missouri, where Elliott and Sallie settled about 1866.

There were no sources listed for Jesse Rose in the file.

So I'm trying to figure out if he was born in Virginia or North
Carolina. No birthplace as given for his wife Mary Esther ELLIOTT,
daughter of Isreal ELLIOTT and Wilmet HODSON (as given in the file she
sent me and which makes sense given Jesse's eldest son's name).

Hope everyone has a profitable New Year. :-)

Ummm ... being descended from a Virginian doesn't necessarily imply he
was born in Virgina? Seems to me Surry is pretty close to the border,
anyway.

The Byrket descendant is getting in touch with her researcher to see
howcum North Carolina.

I did a Mapquest and Surry County, Virginia is 207.87 miles from the
nearest town in NC. I don't know how long it would have taken in the
late 18th early 19th century to travel. It's a little over 3 hours by car.

Thanks for your response.

Mapquest, for all its usefulness, does not show 18th century borders.

Thanks. I should have thought of that when I found out my
great-grandmother's Swiss birthplace is now in Italy.

I guess I look it up an 18th century map.

Again, thanks.
