"California death records"
Where is the best source of California death records without
paying for some subscription? I have tried some google links
such as http://ssdi.rootsweb.com/ with limited results.
I managed to find one death record correctly listing the city
of death with a link to buy more information. Is there any free source
of death records without being redirected to some website
selling names and dates?

try http://www.rootsweb.com and in the left-hand column is something that says
something like "index of all databases" Click that link and then select
California from the resulting list.
OTOH, if you want all the info on a death certificate, the only way to
get that is to buy the certificate from someone -- either the state of
California or anyone else willing to sell it to you. So far as I know,
this is the only way for anyone to get the information...which is why I
have a lot of gaps in my California records. (g)
If you can determine where they died, you might be able to find a
newspaper (off-line) that has the death info in it.

Re: "California death records"
After clicking "Index of all databases," go to this sub-heading and
click on California:
Records from Federal and State Resources:
Social Security Death Index (SSDI)
Death Records: California, Kentucky, Maine, Texas

Oh? I didn't know that. Most places I work you can get them from
either the county or state with the state's copy being the more consistent.
There are firms, Dieter, that do nothing more than acquire certificates
for other folks. Moreover, since you just said the county had the
authority to sell it, doesn't that count as "anyone" ??

No. That is not "anyone." That is a specific "someone."

Re: "California death records"
Death records ARE available from the state. You can sometimes have
better luck there.
I requested a DC from San Francisco and never heard a word, they just
cashed my check. I wrote to them again, mentioning my cashed check, no
response. I subsequently got the DC from the State.
Alameda County, on the other hand, gave excellent service.

Nope. Just pulled my files. I received a full-blown "Certificate of
Death" from the State of California Dept. of Health Services. Its format
is exactly like the one I got from Alameda County's Office of Recorder.
Both are headed "State of California Certification of Vital Record" with
a sub-heading indicating the agency supplying the record.
The two I have from the State each has a letter accompanying it which
states: "Enclosed is a certified copy of the official record currently
on file in the California Office of Vital Records."

Since your response, I did a little more research into this. As it turns out,

are physically held by each county, it's still considered served at the county
