1880 Occupation

Legg inn av Chris » 26 des 2004 22:01:32

Found my GG grandparents in 1880 census in an Ohio city. GG Grandfather's
occupation is listed as "hostler". Anyone know what that means or where I
could look it up myself? Thanks!

A google search found a site with this:

\Hos"tler\, n. [OE. hosteler, osteler, innkeeper, OF.
hostelier, F. h[^o]telier. See {Hostel}, and cf.
{Hospitaler}, {Hosteler}.]
1. An innkeeper. [Obs.] See {Hosteler}.

2. The person who has the care of horses at an inn or stable;
hence, any one who takes care of horses; a groom; -- so
called because the innkeeper formerly attended to this
duty in person.

3. (Railroad) The person who takes charge of a locomotive
when it is left by the engineer after a trip.

Thanks. I didn't think to check Google first. I'll do that before I post
next time.

OP asked about "hostler" not "hosteler"

Two different words.... see dictionary.com

In modern terms, a "hostler" is a teamster who sets up the truck
(tractor/trialer) and hostles the trucks around the yard or warehouse to be
loaded or unloaded with product...
Hope this helps.
