A cousin who is new to genealogy has a Mac. I'm looking for a software
program for her. Reunion is fairly expensive. Has anyone tried the PAF 2.3.1
for Macs? It is only $6. If she used this can she transfer her data to other
programs later?

Almost all genealogy programs (and most certainly PAF*) can share files
using the GEDCOM file format.
There is a free program available for download at freshmeat.net. I have no
experience with it.

Yes. I'd use a newer PAF for PC, run Virtual PC and do it that way.
But, Reunion is really, really, really good.

Yes, she can. And the upside is, DOS-PAF & MacPAF were written for
novices to both genealogy and computers. Which cannot be said for WIN-PAF.

Dave I don't understand your response. "use a newer PAF for PC..." but she
has a Mac.

Well, there's that. Given the choice (and I have been), I'd run Reunion
(and I do), even though I have VPC (which I never use anymore, come
to think of it).
Lots of options, though. If someone just _has to have_ some PC app, we've
got that option. If it makes their transition to Mac easier or
more likely to happen, then it's a net positive for all concerned I guess.

Yes, but if you run Virtual PC on the mac, you can run pretty much any
Windows software you want. With enough RAM for the Windows virtual machine,
and with a non-3d-game-ish program, performance is somewhere between
"tolerable" and "can't tell a difference". With PAF, it's more the
latter, as it's graphical and CPU requirements are minimal so it's easy
for the emulator to handle.
