Census Question

Legg inn av Mary » 21 des 2004 04:43:17

My great aunt was a nun. I know the name she used and the convent she was
in. How would I go about finding her on a census? Thanks for any help.

If you are using ancestry or genealogy.com, you enter the word Sister as the
first name, then Mary Catherine or whatever her name was as the last name.

Hi Mary

What have you tried so far? Have you been using the Heritage Quest online
census or Ancestry or FHC microfilm? There are a couple of approaches, so let
us know what isn't working for you so we can help.

By "convent" I'm assuming you mean the order she was in, because the convent
itself would have an address that you could use to zoom in in a census (at
least the later ones). I had a relative in the convent who had passed away
and was able to contact the order she was in. I explained that I was doing
genealogy research and would they be able to tell me something about her. I
received 10 pages of information about her. If you contact me directly at
shofereratjunodotcom I may be able to help you. Tell me your great aunt's
religious name and the convent she was in ( I use to be a Nun myself, so I
have access to some resources and know the ins- and -outs a little bit
better than some.
Take care,
Sharon

Mary,

Searching is more difficult on HeritageQuest since there is no soundex
search. Perhaps you should post the info here. My aunt, who was also a
nun, was found in the census images by using her birth name.

Right. The civil/legal name continues to be the birth name and that should be
reflected in the census. The religious name, Sister Xyz, is used in the convent
and teaching positions etc. It's not clear what problem she is having and if
this is not another Van Grundy situation, the nun should be locatable by name
at HQ. She could also Browse the location in HQ and then go through the list
when she locates the convent
