Legacy question
Guys, if I talk a few family members into using/buying Legacy (I own
Deluxe but see they also have a Standard version that appears to be
free), can each family member work on their part of the tree and then
each of us, somewhat easily, merge our information together? I see a
merge feature but merges have been very poor things in my past
experience with small pieces often getting lost that you don't realize
until much later.
Ultimately I'd like to have the merge see all the potential conflicts
and prompt you for what to do.

I know you can do a auto merge and a manual merge so I suspect that what
you are talking about is feasible.
Nothing stopping them using the standard version. I would recommend that
you supply it on a CD to them with your affiliate number, as that way
when they do decide to pay for the Deluxe version you will get due
recognition as having got then started with Legacy.

I like how it lets you compare each similar record, decide if they're the
same person or not, and then if you think they are, decide to keep one or the
other entry, or both, and so on. I can't imagine anything getting lost
unless there's a "batch merge" option or something? I"d probably avoid that,
and choose to do it one-by-one. Obviously, back up both files before you
do anything as intrusive as a merge, so worst case, you can go back and
find Aunt Tillie.
I'm sure I've done this with Legacy. I don't use it any more (moved to
a Mac and Reunion) but I remember this as one of the great features.

Others have pointed out good links on the Legacy site. My only comment is
that Legacy's merge feature is the best one going. But must be used with
lots of care. It allows looking at enough data that most times you can be
100% certain that they are indeed the same individual. Very, Very seldom
you may need to go back into the data. And of course there are those that
you can not verify without more outside information. eg: Is the Jane
Smith, the daughter of John Smith the same Jane Smith, the wife of Henry
Jones?
One can get going too fast with the "merge individuals" ending up with an
individual being merged with his gg grandfather. A mess to get corrected.
If you frequently use the merge feature, the Deluxe version's "Mark as not
duplicates" is very helpful. I have a couple hundred "Anna's" that are not
related.
