Questions re: Wisconsin cemetery records

Legg inn av saki » 13 des 2004 21:31:01

I'd been searching for burial or death records for my grandfather's elder
sister and finally found something for Washington County in Wisconsin.
Although the family lived in Chicago they had relatives in the Milwaukee
area.

Margrethe Petersen died in August 1903 at age 15. A cousin had told me
that her death was a suicide but that wasn't confirmed until I saw the
actual death certificate.

The certificate doesn't specify the cemetery where burial took place,
only the city (Milwaukee). The death was apparently in West Bend, where
the death certificate was filed and where the attending physician was
located.

There's a burial permit number noted. Would this help me locate her grave
in the appropriate cemetery, assuming such permits are available? I've
looked through online cemetery transcriptions but have not managed to
locate her so far.

Would a coroner have also been involved in a suicide investigation, and
if so is it worth looking for further information? Or might one of the
local papers have carried a news story or death notice that might reveal
where she was buried?

I noticed that the death certificate gives her occupation as "housewife",
though it notes that she was single. Was this a term used at that time
for unmarried as well as married women who worked in the home?

Many thanks for any insights.
