Ancestry.com Civil War Record question

Legg inn av Bob Rasmussen » 10 des 2004 21:06:18

Question --- In the "Civil War Service Records" listing each soldier there
has
6 titles, i.e., Name, Company, Unit, Rank - Induction, Rank - Discharge,
and Allegiance. However, periodically there is a "Notes" title. Can anyone
tell
me where this information comes from. I have a name -- John A. Hummel, but,
in the Notes it indicates "Hummell John H" What meaning would that
typically
have?

Regards...Bob

If Ancestry took their data off the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors
System, the info comes from the CSR card.

On the data-entry procedure NOTES was used for aliases or other
alternate information.

If Ancestry didn't just link to the CWSSS, it still looks like an alias
.... It's not difficult to write a cursive H so it looks like an A.

Thanks, Cheryl...

Having said that, would you say that the correct name is the one
that appears as Name: John A. Hummel or the Notes name
John H. Hummell? Company E, 28th Pennsylvania Inf. shows
John H. Hummel (no second 'l') as a soldier. What would you
conclude? Full Entry....

Name: John A. Hummel
Company: E
Unit: 28 Pennsylvania Info.
Rank-I: Private
Rank-D: Private
Allegiance: Union
Notes: Hummell John H

Lacking further info on either of them, it's hard to say. But one l
more or less isn't a big deal, and as I say, I've seen and written a lot
of H that look more like A. If they were both in the same unit and
you've no good reason to suspect there were two of 'em, ...?

Data entry worked from copies from the microfilm; quality wasn't great
and we were told to enter as much as we could read and the file-matching
would catch those we couldn't.

Thanks, Cheryl...was hoping to find a John Albert Hummel(l). All I
knew was that he was possibly in the Civil War and probably signed
up in Phila. Unfortunately, there are lots of John Hummels from PA
and don't have any further information to narrow him down. There
was indeed a John H. Hummel in Company E, 28 Pennsylvania Inf.,
but, no John A. Hummel. Will keep trying to match him up.

Thanks for the help...Bob
