Family Tree Maker ?
I have an old Family Tree Maker version 4.0. I have done a little with it
in the past, and have a few files for it on one side of the family. Will
this install on Windows XP or should I just buy a new version? I went to
there web site but cannot find a way to contact them with out a $2.00/min.
charge. Or is there another program I could get that is as good or better
that I can import these files into? Thanks.

Hi!
Try Legacy, I think it is very good, and you can import your PAF.

I'm still using FTM version 7.5 for Windows 95/98 and it recently
transferred over to XP with no problems. There were some slight differences
in the screen appearance on XP, but all my data and photos of thousands of
folks made the trip seamlessly.
I had thought about installing and trying Legacy but wondered if and how all
the scrapbook photos I have in FTM could be transferred in the mass move.

Re: Family Tree Maker ?
I did install the version 4 on my XP HomeEdition. It worked fine and opened
all files. Except the ones I had made with a downloaded patch years ago. I
got a message that the files were made with a later version.
But it did work. Now I'm going to have to buy the new 2005 to open some of
my files.

one untill they fix the problems.
Hope this helps some.

Re: Family Tree Maker ?
My only problem with 2005 is that there is no direct link to
genealogy.com as there was in the past. Now the only direct link takes
you to ancestry.com. So if you lose your cookies to genealogy.com you
can't go in from the program to reset them. You have to email their help
desk to get it fixed. Frustrating, but not fatal!

I went to pick up FTM today, and saw Family Tree Legends, which I mistakenly
thought was Legacy. It said on the box it would import FTM files. I bought
it. Since you can't return opened software, I downloaded an evaluation copy
and zilch, it will not open FTM files like it said. Thus, it goes back
tomorrow and will pick up FTM like I should have to begin with.

There is an AKA field in Legacy, but, it doesn't add the names to the names
list, so there is no feature for searching by that spelling of the name.
As for the scrolling feature - I like clicking on the scroll bar - how many
times do you need to see a name on a page?
take care

The scroll windows are also driving me crazy even more of late. In
standard windows apps, all I need to do is put the mouse cursor over a

under there is an option to include AKAs in list ...
I just want a simple "Nickname(s)" feature. In Legacy it's a bit
cryptic how to add and manage these. For example, I have a baseball
player in the family by the name of James McGinnis who was known as
Mugsy McGinnis. I don't want to ever see two actual entries for James.
I'd just like to see James in the various views with his various
nicknames.
I'm not talking about completely different last names or various
spellings. To me, there's the correct spelling and then there's the
incorrect spelling which should, in my view, be noted as part of the
original spelling. Legacy does handle it that way but it's just not
easy to work with (at least so far).
The scroll windows are also driving me crazy even more of late. In
standard windows apps, all I need to do is put the mouse cursor over a
list and scroll. Here I have to actually select something in the list
before it will scroll.

I simply enter James "Mugsy" McGinnis. This doesn't interfere with any
printouts or searches and if the nickname was actually what he was called by
most people, it should appear as part of his name, IMO. A "pet" name that
only a few people called him could be mentioned in Notes.
I always enter the correct or formal name of an individual, even if it's not
the actual name that person went by. Then I explain any inconsistencies in
Notes.
