REQ: Need some help please
Hi, I am an American living and teaching in China. I desperately
need to get some information about marriage and divorce dates on
myself so that I can request a copy of my divore decree from the
states.
When I was in the USA about 6 years ago, I could find out several
family trees that included myself for free. Now, every web site I
find info on me, they want money. I don't object to this but I have
no credit cards. So, it's a problem.
Does anyone know any sites where the info is free? Thanks for any
help any kind soul provides.

Let me see if I understand this correctly. You were married and then
divorced, but you have no idea what the dates were? This sounds
somewhat like a person phishing......

You'll have to write to the places where the marriage and divorces
took place.

Nope, not phishing. My sister and I did our genealogy from about 1985 to
1992. I am in CHINA and you can only bring so many things with you. No
baggage room four volumes of research materials.
I didn't ask anyone to look it up for me, just where I maybe can find it.
Have you ever been 8,000 miles away from home and needed some info in your
county clerk's office. Just try to understand.

Well, I'm sure that using the wrong identity will cause quite a stir. I
apologize. This is only about my 3rd post to a newsgroup

As I said in my reply to Jim, I am 8,000 miles away from my county clerk's
office. I am in CHINA. It takes 2 - 3 months for snail mail to go to USA
and to come this way.
Can you imagine with typical bureaucratic ineptness... "Sir you need to
also provide this and that etc."... ending up with 2 or 3 mail exchanges.
It could take 6 months to a year to get it.
I need to get it for the American Consulate here. They want it asap. I am
just trying to get accurate info b4 mailing them.
I have been to the county clerk's website and left messages asking what do
I need to do as far as info and fees they need (there is no email address
for them, just a "leave us a message" form). No replys, and yes I gave them
my email address in the form field.
I have to have my ex-spouse's date and place of birth, our marriage date,
divorce date and decree.
And yes, this info exists on Ancestery.com. I have seen it 4 or 5 years
ago.

Jim, that was my intial reaction, too...
I still don't understand what exactly he's trying to do after reading
through all the subsequent posts, but, if he doesn't have a credit card,
he's screwed anyways, because I've gotten two or three recent death
certificates through the web (and paid a heavy price for them, believe me!)
with a credit card. They won't ship them overseas, so he'll need to give a
US address to mail them too and have that person mail them to him. Either
way it goes, he can't get the information online or for free anymore. It's
getting to where all information will soon have to be paid for. But the
information he specifically wants won't be free at all. That's from
experience. Even the one world tree isn't free.
Good Luck though,
Dani

Hopefully the information is still there and hasn't been pulled off the web.
Many people got mad at Ancestry.com when it came up with the one world tree
b/c they were gonna have to pay for this service. I pulled my own tree, but
after looking at it again, I might put it back up. Thanks for posting that,
Dennis.

Re: REQ: Need some help please
My understanding of China is that it is still on this planet, and since you
have access to a computer, Thomas, and presumeably a phone, why can't you
ask a family member to look up this information about youself? Or if maybe
they remember your wedding. Or email the county clerks office (try Google).
Or the church where you were married. The lawyer who helped you with your
divorce. Or the American consolate. And so on. It seems to me that trying to
find your marriage and divorce information of someone elses genealogical
research but only online is probably the least efficient way to go about
this.
