FTW reference numbering

Legg inn av DrDan99 » 02 des 2004 04:52:00

I'm doing a single surname study and have many individuels with same or very
simular names. I'm starting to collect a large amount of documentation on
these individuels but need to a naming system for filing these documents.
The data in in FTW. I save the FTW file every 1-2 weeks with a new name.
For example, if the previous file was m101504 meaning started on Oct 15
2004. I copy the file, place it in a new folder and rename it as m102204 for
Oct 22 2004. I then open the new file and use it as my working file for the
next few weeks.

My question: If I use the FTW reference number that is built into the
program, does this number always stay the same for that individuel, even
with changing file names and multiple additions and some deletions and other
changes to the database? If this number will absolutely stay the same, I can
use it in a naming skem and use it to index this data for lookup. If this
number ever changes, I will have a screwed up mess. Suggestions or comments.

Yup. The ref nrs will stay the same. It is the same file, just has a new
name. You can save yourself a step, if you are working with bloggins, just
do a backup and then do a 'save as' bloggins1104. This will create a new
identical file, with the name bloggins1104, and you will already be using
that file. And you will still have the original file on your drive that
will still be called Bloggins.

Should you want to go back to the old file, just go to file close for
bloggins1104 and file open bloggins.

Enjoy
