Online Database recommendation

Legg inn av DrDan99 » 29 nov 2004 05:00:30

I'm doing a single surname study. I've done the free side of Ancestry.com. I
need to connect some "blanks" and would like to add documentation to what I
already have. I'm not convinced that the their "OneTree" has much value to
me (I may be wrong) but some other databanks look interesting. Most of what
I would look at are PA, MD, and OH censes, wills and births. Maybe some
church record and newpaper obits.
Is Ancestry worth the money? If so what database are good.
Any other recommendations?

I have never found the "trees" in Ancestry to be of real value, and prefer
to rely on actual or transcribed public records for my own single-name
study. I search the Ancestry census database almost daily and for me it's
worth the $79.95/year. I also subscribe to their US records database at
$39.95. Godfrey Memorial Library also offers online access to its holdings
for $35/year, which includes most census years as well as many early
newspapers and books. Census-wise, I prefer Ancestry because they allow
every-name searches in many years, whereas Godfrey only offers a head of
household search. Valuable when all you have is the name of a child and are
looking for the parents.

Otherwise, what you choose may depend on your available finances and how
much you might otherwise spend on travel or scanning microfilm. These
subscriptions may not be cost-effective for everyone, but they are certainly
worth it to me.
