GILLETTE - Illinois - African American

Legg inn av Gjest » 21 nov 2004 22:12:21

I am searching for the family of James Gillette, b. 1896 in Arkansas,
d.1959 in Chicago, Illinois. {have death cert, was widowed,
self-employed, (coal business) so no social security (self-employed
weren't covered then)}

I have his WWI draft registration card, too. Next of kin listed as
"Wife," no name.

Burial plot was purchased by deceased, no further information.

Wife: Martha SMITH, b. ?? (from son's SS-5)
No information on her death, but based on his marital status at death,
she died before 1959.

Two children:
1) James Jr., b. Little Rock, Arkansas, 1921 Died 1974 Chicago,
Illinois; (have SS-5 and death cert)

Wife Wilma Davis Macklin d. 1992 Illinois

2) Mildred b. ??? Married?? died???

I have found James as a child in 1900 and 1910. His family is missing
from the 1920 census. Yes, I have scoured it, and no, the family had not
moved. They are in the same location in 1910 and 1930. Grandpa died
there in 1947, my father in 1994. Also, other families that lived near
them are missing from the 1920 census, including my mother's family.
[Very annoying/aggravating since that's the first census for both of my
parents plus, by 1930, some children were out of the households.]

Based on WWI draft card info, James was already married by 1920, but I
haven't found him anywhere in 1920 or 1930. I believe he moved to
Illinois in the late 1930s.

I know that Mildred had four children, don't know their surname. Would
like to locate them too. James, Jr had no children. (Of course not. That
would mean I'd know their surname!! Sheesh.)

A little more information might help. Where did you find James in 1900 and
1910? Was his family in Little Rock, Pulaski Co, AR? How was the name
spelled? Who were his parents?

I have looked and can't find anything close in 1900 through 1930.

Oops! Sorry about that omission. James was born in 1896, in Clark
County, Arkansas. James' father was Daniel C. Gillett(e).

James' mother died in Oct 1899, and in the 1900 census, James is in the
household of his granduncle, Lucius Stroope, along with his grandmother,
Ellen Stroope Anderson and her children, [Mary, William, Beulah, Nella
and Dorsey Anderson] in Caddo Twp, Clark County, Arkansas.

[In the 1900 census, Daniel C Gillett(e) is the elusive one. He
remarried in 1901. And in 1907 and 1915, all recorded in Clark County]

In the 1910 census, James is in the household with his father, Daniel C
Gillett, and stepmother, Hannah, in Caddo Twp, Clark County, Arkansas.
with siblings Richard and Stephen plus step-siblings James, Callie, Lula
May, Irena and Asarena Stoutenberg.
