Publisdhing with Family Tree Maker

Legg inn av Ephraim » 17 nov 2004 17:24:11

Trees on every site I've seen show the first ame "living" and no date of
birth for those who are, I understand why, privacy. And I want to preserve
it. How do I convert names in my FTM to "living?" Should I be putting in
an "Unk" for the date of death for those I know are dead?

Thanks

In Version 10 of FTM, there is a setting you can select for hiding
information pertaining to living people. File-Preferences-Privatize. I
can't remember right now if the previous version also had that feature.

If you know the death date (or even the year), for those you know to be
dead, then you should go ahead and use that information. When I know
that someone is dead, but don't know the exact year, I'll put in that
they died after whatever year I last knew for certain that they were
alive during. For example, if I saw Great-Uncle Henry back in 2002,
then heard he died, but not which year, I'd put that he died 'after
2002'. This way, when you're researching, you'll have some kind of a
date to use.

Take care,

At Rootsweb's WorldConnect, you decide how you want your data displayed.
You can choose to show living people as "Living" without privatizing
your GEDCOM first. This is a good thing because it allows you to upload
your full data as a backup, and at the same time lets you to restrict
what is shown on the web.

You also decide whether or not to allow your GEDCOM to be downloaded by
others. You can always download your own GEDCOM, even it you restrict it
for others, providing an offsite backup for you, unlike various backups
you store at home.

This may also be true of other sites, but I haven't used others.

The "privatize" feature would be useful if you want to restrict data
when sharing information offline.
