Does anyone know how current the Social Security Death Index is posted
online? I found a posting dated November 28, 2003.

Thanks

Rootsweb's SSDI copy seems to be through January 31, 2004. I believe it is the
most current. [It's shared by Ancestry.com.]

The version on ancestry.com is current through August or September 2004.

RootsWeb's used to be the most current, but no longer. Ancestry's (which
is in their "pay for" section) is more current. That's the RootsWeb rub,
of course. Even though the database is available, Ancestry wants people to
pay for it and thus has stopped updating the RW database. They have not
indicated that they will ever again update the RootsWeb SSDI. I have heard
that one problem is that businesses (who used to buy the data from the SSA)
were making excessive business use of the free RootsWeb SSDI and were
consuming excessive amounts of staff time - all without paying a cent or
having any interest in genealogy.

Genealogy.com (if they still have it) may be the most out of date of
all. Familysearch.org is more current that RW. NEHGS is up to date
through Sept 1st. 2004. It is FREE to visitors of newenglandancestors.org.
