Gedcom question

Legg inn av Radar » 09 nov 2004 23:45:20

I have relatives on my mother's side who are interested in Genealogy as well
as my father's side though neither side is interested in the family history
of the other side. My question then would be; how do you filter a gedcom
file that contains both sides of my family so I can send each only their
side? I realize I can do "ancestors of" and save the gedcom but that leaves
out a great many cousins etc. I could take all the "descendents of" and
combine them and hopefully get everyone but that is time consuming and prone
to mistakes. Is there a better way? Am I missing something obvious?

mostly you do that most easy in the program and generate two GEDCOM,

one for each family

In legacy one can "tag" a group of peoples names, and then produce a gedcom
based on that tag.

take care

What I have done in cases like that is to make a copy of the data file.
Suppose I want just my mothers side. Using the copy I delete or unlink
individuals such as my fathers parents. This unlinks his family.

At this point you need something like Legacy's tag feature. You can tag
your entire family line. Since your fathers ancestors are not linked they
will not be tagged. Then make a gedcom of the tagged individuals.

It depends on the capability of the program you use to create the GEDCOM file.

I use Family History System (FHS) for that purpose.

It allows one to select a person (say the 5th cousin twice removed) who wantes
the GEDCOM, and then select every relative of that person in the file.

You have the option of making secondary selections (eg spouses and parents of
spouses), and it then creates the GEDCOM.

Other programs I've used don't seem to make it as easy, which is why I still
use FHS, though it hasn't been updated since 1993, as my program of first
entry. Its method of selection of records for export has never been equalled,
much less superseded, by any more recent program.

Actually, both PAF 5 and Ancestral Quest 11 have the same filtering
capabilities. From the PAF 5 "help" file:

All Related: Use this relationship filter to select an individual and
everyone related to him or her, including ancestors, descendants,
siblings, aunts, uncles, spouses, and in-laws. It may select everyone in
the .paf file.

Ancestors: Use this relationship filter to select an individual and his
or her spouse, parents, siblings, and direct-line ancestors. You can
decide how many generations of ancestors, how many generations of
descendants, whether to include spouses, and whether to include all
parents or only the primary parents.

All Ancestors Related: Use this relationship filter to select an
individual and his or her parents, siblings, and ancestors; all of the
ancestors' siblings, parents, children, and spouses; and each one of
those individual's ancestors. This search gives you an individual's
direct line and all collateral lines. If two or more lines have
intermarried, this relationship filter gives the same results as the All
Related relationship filter, and it may select everyone in the .paf file.

Descendants: Use this relationship filter to select an individual and
his or her descendants. You select how many generations to include and
whether to include spouses.

All Descendants Related: Use this relationship filter to select an
individual and his or her all descendants of the individual, and the
descendants' siblings, parents, children spouses, and each one of those
individual's ancestors. If two or more lines have intermarried, this
relationship filter gives the same results as the All Related
relationship filter, and it may select everyone in the .paf file.

Watch PAF with those Descendants Related choices, though.

All Descendants drops spouses (or, at the VERY least, it has done so
every time I've used it)

All Descendants Related will show the CP's great-granddaughter's 2nd
husband's mother's first husband's great-great-grandfather. (This one
turned up people I didn't even know were IN the database!)

I haven't used PAF 5, but in 4 I found it included all descendants of spouses
of relations, which is practically the whole database.

It didn't seem to be nearly as precise a tool as the FHS one.

The answer should lay in how you do your export from your genealogy program.
I use PAF5 but most of the ones I have looked at did an export and allowed
the user to select who was being exported. Coy
