Hi,
For months now I have been having problems with Familysearch.org 1880 free
census lookup. For a while I could just keep trying and it would finally go
through but that is no longer the case. Does anyone know what is going on?
Or when it will be fixed? I loved that site in the past and miss it
terribly.
Thanks,
Nancy

I was at a Family History Center yesterday and posed the same question. I
have been informed that they are in the process of making significant
changes to the site which will be effective in January 2005. Consequently,
we are experiencing problems with the census searches. However, in my
experience you can do a general search rather than census specific and it
brings up the results of the 1880 census.

Is it true that the FHC is transitioning all the microfilm to CDs? That
seems to be the concensus of opinion at mine. I can't imagine not cranking
a good ol' microfilm reader!

Not even a general search is working tonight. It is really out!

A message on the general search screen says "Search is unavailable due
to maintenance. SEA-011." Presumably it should be back up eventually.

One thing that might help (*), is emptying your cache. Click on Tools,
Internet Options, Delete Files, Delete all offline content.

It is true that that is a long-range goal; it may also be true that they
are no longer microfilming new acquisitions but are scanning them instead.
It is true that there is a new announcement about no new micorfilm
readers being approved; the context of that announcement is a little
fuzzy, though, so that may be feeding the "no-more-microfilm" rumors.
Given the length of time it takes even Ancestry to digitize one roll
of microfilm, I don't expect film readers to go obsolete anytime real
soon. (g)

Re: FamilySearch.org problems?
That is interesting. No new readers could be a problem since they seem to
be on their last legs as it is. Oh, well. I'm sure it will all work out in
the end.
BTW, the website is doing fine although you can't choose which census you
want, today.
