Do you not have more about John?

Never seen his fathers name? (john johnsen/-hansen/-carlsen ...)

Where did you found his birthday, where did yoy found the immigration?

Did he used the name Brun when he arrivde USA?

It is difficult to help with so little information.

To everybody:
When I search emigration 1890 from Oslo in Digitalarkivet I do not find any name. Anybody that can explain the reason?

Regards Helge.

I wonder if you know some more, to where did he emigrate? Was his ticket prepaid? Did he go to relatives, was he married, had family? Names of children, some time using nametridition which can lead to his father or mother's first name.

I found some possible Johns. Name might be written Jon, Johan, Johannes and like that. Also surname might be changed, made shorter of Brune, Brunstad etc etc. The word
'brun' means brown. In 1860's they often did not use surname (like Brun), but father's name like Lars as Larsen. And they might had lived at a farm with name Brun...... .

His birth - is that from his birth certificat? There are often small, asumingly not important details that can help.

Helge, he might have emigrated from northern, southern or western parts of Norway, - or even Gottenburg or Germany I assume.

Happy Easter!

Hi Virginia,

From FS, this is most probably the John Brun you are seeking info on link In addition to the queries from Helge and Marianne: where did you find his year of immigration into US ?

Best, Kjell H.

Virginia, I guess you mean John Brun married to Mary from Sweeden and living in Clearbrook, Clearwater MN and had 9 children i the census 1910 ? He died Aug. 29, 1954.
There is one John N. Brun in Christiania (Oslo) census 1875, but he was born Johan N (Nordahl) Brun Feb.16 bapt. March 1, 1867.
Maybe he had another patronymikon/lastname when he was born and changed to Brun after arrival in USA? Are you sure about his birth date May 5, 1867??

John N. is not the right one. I thought so at first but was able to prove other wise. I am not sure now, but I believe I found immigration records that has John N coming to the US later and I think I also found hm in a 1900 census record.

All the information I have been able to gather in the US is the birthday he used for all the records. I have no primary documents. His naturalization papers stated his name was John Brun his birthday was 1867 and he entered the US thru the port of Chicago in April of 1890. Us census records confirm his birth year and immigration year.
He told his family that he came from "Oslo". I have searched all the church records and census records and have found nothing in Oslo.
The only clue I have that his name is correct is that the sponsor for his first child born in the US was Johannes Brun, born to Hans Brun and Annie Mari Pertersdatter in Aurlands.
That family I found in the 1865 Census in Norway. Since I found a female child born to this couple in 1867 I doubt that my John is a younger brother to Johannes born in 1860.
Johannes lived in another town in the US and had to travel to be a sponsor, so I believe there has to be some kind of a family tie.

the Johan Herman found in this 1865 census is the man who was the sponsor to the first child born to John Brun in the US. I am trying to find out how they are related.
