Andreas Rask Andreasen Rystad b. 1839

Hello,

I have an ancestor named Andreas Rask Andreasen Rystad that I am now looking for a birth record to verify the names of his parents and his birth date.

I believe he was born or baptized 09 May 1839 to parents Andreas Rask Pedersen Rystad and Anne Catrina Sørensdatter. When I look at the digitized parish records at Digitalarkivet, Gimsøy doesn't start until 1852. Vågan doesn't start until 1843. There is no listing for Lofoten. Can you tell me where I should look for his birth record?

Also, does anyone know if there is any significance to the name "Rask"? I see this name used with several of my ancestors from this area.

The Parish files of Vågan from before 1843 (with one exception) are unfortunately lost in a fire, so a birthrecord or Baptizerecord is impossible to find.

The surname "Rask" is also written "Rash". There are still people with that name. Where the name came from, and when it first appeared, I cannot tell.

I believe it is your Andreas Rask I have found in the 1865 census at Digitalarkivet:
Andreas born 1839, working as a teacher in Lyngvær - not far from Gimsøy.

I also believe his mother Ane Katrine Sørensdatter lives with another son, Carl Andreassen, Rystad here in the census 1865, 68 years old:

In the census of 1801 the father of Ane Katrine, born 1799, is Søren Nielsen, 36 years in 1801 and mother Maren Hansdatter, 31 years in 1801. There is also a grand-dad Niels Olsen 80 years in 1801:

The father of Andreas, Andreas Rask Pedersen, died nov 14th 1859, 71 years old. His mother is Ane Olsdatter 12 years old in 1801 census. Andreas is a son from her first marriage. In the census 1801 he is called stepson to the husband of Ane Olsdatter:

Sorry, I have just noticed that I have written that the age of Ane Olsdatter is 12 years. It should be 48 years in 1801. The Son Andreas Pedersen is 12.

Thank you, Paul. We have the same problem with fire and historical records here in the USA. Our entire 1890 census was lost in a fire. It's good to know what happened to the Vågan records, so I don't spend a lot of time looking for them.

I am still really curious about the Rask name. Hopefully something turns up.

According to the annual marriage lists for Gimsøy written by the "lensmann":
Widower Andreas Pedersen Rystad married Ane Kathrina Sörensdatter the 13 of August 1825.

His first marriage was with Karen Lagesdatter in 1815, the 18. of August. His middle name Rasch is used in this record. According to death lists from the "lensmann" she died in 1823.

I am related to Nils Olsen and Abelona Andersdatter in Brenna through their son Bernt, who lived in Uvåg, Bø in Vesterålen.
