Hi :)

Her is most likely Ingeborg in 1865 cencus in Veø, M & R. There are 6 farms called Herje i Norway 1865 and all are in Veø (now Veøy). Anders Sivertsen, father. Aagot Pedersdatter, mother. And 7 :!: children. Veøya belongs now to Molde.

Hi :)

Here is some pictures from the church. It is very old, the building from ca 1200, and is now only used for special occasions.

Hi again!

It is not 100% certain but this is maybe her husband Iver with family in 1865 cencus. He is living on the farm Slemmen, Veøy and is born ca. 1854. Peder Jørgensen and Synnøve Eriksdatter are parents. 4 children and servants below.

To find out if this is the right Iver, we need to find Churchrecord of their marriage. If they married in Veøy, the records ends in 1877.

Thank you so much. I appreciate all that you have found, however, I also found this information. I have most of it, however, I appreciate the pics of the church and her baptismal records, I did not have this. Who I am really trying to find is her husband Iver Pedersen. I do not have any information on him, all I know is that his family also used the name Brevik or Bredvik, which I think may be the farm name. I have done extensive searching at Ellisisland.org for his name, but without his parents name, etc. it is hard. I don't know when he came to the US but I do know that he was born in 1852 in Norway. Family history says that either Ingeborg or Iver were married before in Norway and had a son???? We have no idea of his name, etc. Please let me know if you have any information or where else I could search. I have searched the census in Norway.

Also, how could I find out if there is anyone still living on the farm Herje? Thanks.

Hi :)

You get what You ask for  . You had Ingeborg in the headline, where Iver Pedersen should have been. And second You should always tell everything You know.

Hi :)

This may be Iver Pedersen in 1865 cencus for Næsset (Nesset) M&R. He and his family live on Bredvik farm. Parents Peder Knutsen and Karen Ivarsdatter. Iver and 1 brother and 1 sister.

Thank you so much for all your help Anne. Could you explain some farm history to me please. If a family takes the farm name, and they leave that parcel of land and move to another parcel of land, does the farm name go with the people, or does the farm name stay with the land?
Thanks,

Hi :)

I am no expert on this subject  , so hopefully somebody with more expertice will answer Your question. But I found and article on the net.

For people living on the countryside up to the first half of 1800, girls used "datter" and boys used "sen" in the ending of their fathers given name. Often there could be several with the same name in the village, and then they used the farmname as an identification.

In the last part of 1800 it was more normal to use only "sen" ending. This started in the cities and spread out to the countryside.

First in the beginning of 1900 people started to use the farm name as surname. And they took the name with them if they moved. Often people who stayed on the farm started to "change the spelling" :?: when the language changed, but people who have moved kept the original spelling. Please excuse my english . I hope someone with more knowledge can either correct me or give more information.

Mvh
Anne Lisbeth

I have, as moderator, moved this thread to Rauma where all the Herjefarms are located today.

In this thread in Molde, Iver Pedersen f. Brevik born 1852 there is a discussion of the origins of Ingeborg's husband. (I have placed it under Molde, because these Brevikfarms were the closest to Herje. :) )

I have sent you a list with a lot of Ingeborg's ancestors back to ca 1500. As we have some common ancestors it was easy to make the last links.

Greetings from
Osvald
